Family Services India
Family Care partner: Family Services India - Project Managers Mark and Carina Hanson, Xavier Daniels
In the aftermath of the Asian tsunami, Family Services India (FSI) renovated a key school, which had been heavily damaged, and continues to meet the educational needs of the children from the local fishing community. After renovation, Family Services India also constructed an additional new building, adding eight new classrooms and an auditorium.
In an effort to strengthen the educational standards, FSI hosted seminars for local teachers from over 35 schools, concentrating at first on an emotional healing program. Another seminar was conducted for the teachers to create awareness and sensitivity to the children's emotional needs.
In addition to the teacher training, each school involved was presented with audio vision materials, books, songbooks and other auxiliary material. Replacements were provided to make up for the loss of children's books and records swept away in the tsunami. Notebooks, schoolbags, pencils and other school materials were also provided. Additionally, quality material was distributed to five schools to provide school uniforms for the students.
In other tsunami-affected areas, another school was repainted, inside and out, while at others playground equipment was provided and erected.
